tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-45033888006908347152024-02-20T10:39:30.024+01:00My Year AbroadI am in a 5 year degree program earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.A. in German. I completed a semester at the Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig and have an Praktikum in BMW Research and Innovation Center(FIZ) working under Functional Integration of Driving Dynamics. This will just be my little "blog" of my progress, trips, blunders while i'm in Europe for the first time.
My Year Abroad; Germany and a number of other countries.Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.comBlogger86125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-77548068676853745592011-08-30T18:12:00.001+02:002011-08-31T08:03:53.752+02:00Farewell BMW; what a fantastic experienceToday was the last day of my Praktikum. I used the remaining 7 hours of Gleitzeit to take tomorrow off. I got another send-off gift of Weißwurscht in a can and a tube of Süße Senf (sweet mustard) to go with it! I made my rounds saying goodbye to those who were in the office, and in all the workshops. I wrote e-mails to those who were underway with test drives and vacations. The IEP contact and good friend had invited me for a last round of coffee, and we talked about future plans and old cars. It was a great end to a wonderful experience. I have met so many nice people, got to see behind the scenes in Motorsport both at BMW and at races; met many race car drivers as well. I have accomplished a lot more in this Prakiktum than I expected doing all the "Top Secret" stuff you read about in car magazines.

It felt like yesterday where I was just started and was absolutely in shock and awe of all the Prototype vehicles (signiture black/white swirls on a car). But it became an every day part of life. I had a hand in preparing and driving many vehicles that wouldn't reach consumers for months or longer. It was a real treat. I now have an understanding of the inner workings of such a large company, but also have a lot to think about in terms of career paths, choices, and possibilities. I am a firm believer that I would not have found an internship that would have made me any happier. It has definitely been a life experience of which (hopefully) will make me a better, culturally aware, aspiring global engineer. Once I get back, I have a difficult transition reintegrating into American life. Among contending with reverse culture shock, and due to sad events in life, I need to find a new residence and move all within 5 days before the semester start. I might have to sell my beloved car as I barely made ends meet in this summer abroad (though the experience was more than worth it). Many new challenges lay ahead, but I survived a year in Germany, this should be cake, right?

Fewer updates to come, so I thank those for following my life over the past year, and hope it has been somewhat entertaining for you. A lot has happened in a year, but I wish I could have done more. Who knows what the future holds, maybe I'll be able to come back somehow.
I went to the Gäubodenvolksfest in Straubing with some friends. It was a large carnival atmosphere with a Bavarian/Bierfest twist. The Town was beautiful (as to be expected at this point), the food was great, and the company made it all the better. It was a sunny day, a bit warm, so we often took shelter in a Bierzelt (Beer tent).

There were rides, games, and lots of food vendors offering up a variety of delicious delectables. I was talked into getting a set of Lederhosen and the ladies helped me pick out what matched what. It was great going on some carnival rides and listening to the bands play.

While on the Ferris Wheel, we could see some large rain clouds rolling in from the distance. We went on one more ride, and rushed back to the Hauptbahnhof JUST in time to make the train before the downpour. What an eventful day.

Monday was a holiday and a friend had a visitor. We went to the Allianz arena and visited Olympiapark. All this time I had NO idea that there were imprints made in concrete by a bunch of musical artists. Saw BMW Welt/Museum then headed out to the Englischer Garten to eat/drink at the Chinesischer Turm. It was great talking and eating the Halbes Hend'l (half chicken) with a good Weißbier to wash it down. I am going to miss Germany a lot when I return to the states. I hope i can manage to come back for grad school, and even more so in Bayern. But at this point, Aachen is also looking attractive. It started to rain so we parted ways. I was awfully tired so I took a nap, and still managed to get a full nights sleep.

I'll be working on a Praktikumsbericht to hand in. I'm still a bit confused on the format, but we'll see. There's a lot of sensitive info I need to generalize. Next week is my interview for the Praktikumszeugnis (certificate of internship).

For the past month and some I have been doing some time lapse photography. I'll try to post up some examples, but i'd love to make a snipet video of my short time while here in Bayern/Germany.

Stay tuned...
We talked about the program and some future goals. It was very informative and low key. Everyone got along nicely and it was good to network a little bit. I had expressed my interest in grad studies in Germany. I am still torn between the IEP route and applying for TU München and RWTH Aachen. TUM would be stellar, because I have fallen in love with this city. The location, the spirit, the atmosphere is just amazing.

After the meeting, another student colleague and I went to the Chinesicher Turm with Dr. Berka to meet up with some IEP Alums and she had invited us for a Beer and some food. We talked about all things IEP and academics along with what we have done, gained, and learned while abroad. She seemed quite pleased with our development and proficiency in German, however I feel as though my skills have declined. I forgot some basic rules, made trivial mistakes and my vocabulary/grammar has definitely suffered. The only thing that has truly improved is conquering the fear of saying something wrong. It's better to make mistakes and be corrected all the time. Eventually, there will be no more mistakes to be made.

It was nice meeting up with a couple familiar faces (from the IEP Alums dinner a couple months ago). I will need to set up an appointment with Dr.Berka to get more information on scholarships and application processes for the Dual Masters Track. If only IEP had a program with TUM
I took a rental car up to Neuss to stay at another IEP students place. I left, but because of traffic and a MAJOR accident, I didn't get to his house until 2am Saturday morning. On a two lane freeway/highway, there was a semi-truck/LKV that caught fire; there was no part of the truck that was not in flames, or on fire itself. The terrifying thing was, because it shut down both lanes, the Emergency response was gridlocked at a stand still 2 km from the event. There was absolutely no place for traffic to pull over.

I get to Neuss and quickly fall asleep. My phone had died and due to poor planning on my part, I was unable to organize the Ring Taxi. John and I left Neuss at 10am and ended up at the Nürburgring around 11:30am. We checked into Rent4Ring and took care of the paperwork for a half-day rental. I opted for the 130 hp Suzuki Swift Stage 2 rental which was included race oriented tires, brakes and suspension, bucket seats and rollcage. It was perfectly underpowered for a Nürburgring beginner.6 Laps, and gas were included in the cost.

Nürburgring
Frist Lap:
It was a good warm up lap, testing the tires and warming the brakes through cautious entry in corners and then more aggressive inputs when there was a clear line of sight for the track ahead. This was a learning process to try to remember corners for the following laps. I don't need to say it, but this track was amazing.

Second/Third Lap:
I remembered key corners of concern, but it is still impossible to know the proper driving lines. That comes with hundreds of hours and laps on the Nürburgring, I wasn't going to accomplish this in that time. But I remembered many of the right and lefts after each corner. The switching camber/banking in turns was the most difficult to tackle. It started to drizzle, but the Toyo R888 still felt fine and held good traction when pushing it hard. I was following a Porsche that finally signalled me to pass. John and I both joked around about being faster than a Porsche, but I totally understand the mindset of trying not to damage something so expensive, and enjoying the track for what it was. The Suzuki was underpowered which made it much easier to drive flatout and fast with headroom to safely manage emergency situations... I would be extra cautious in larger, heavier, more powerful vehicles. ....I was then passed by an Opel Corsa.

We took a break and another friend had met up with us at the Nürburgring after tending to some business in Köln. We sat and talked for a while, then headed into a Diner to eat and chat some more. It started to downpour, I was going to do my last 3 laps in the worst conditions outside snow on one of the worlds most famous racetracks.

Fourth Lap:
The ground was wet, but the R888 held up quite well! Some off camber corners I could feel the grip starting to surrender. There were a couple of accidents, one at Wehrseifen which is a hard right followed by a banked left before the second blind track entrance (there are posted speedlimits for public days for a reason). Then also another at Brünnchen which is a downhill right sweeper followed by an uphill right. There were a couple cautions this lap, so it was relatively nerveracking because the accident would be behind a blind corner.

Fifth Lap:
It is absolute DOWN-POUR. It is raining hard, the windows are fogging up, the deforst and wiper blades are on full blast. The tires were not happy at all. Squeeling tires are happy tires, these went silent. I attacked the course with caution. It was interesting seeing what driving lines other cars took, but i kept it wide and slow, trying to keep the shift and steering inputs smooth to avoid sudden under/oversteer. Right at the start, I was following a 7 series. It was accelerating very fast in the straights but I caught up in corners. Right hand curve into Hatzenbach and the 7er loses control. He is rotating toward the barrier and I follow the tail, passing on the left. With luck he managed not to hit the barrier. There were 4 moments during this lap where I thought I was going to snuff it. Aremberg was tretcherous, I entered too hot and got good amount of wheel lockup and understeer before the right hander. This was one of the panic moments where left foot braking really saved the situation. It was just enough to get the car to rotate pointing into the corner meanwhile shedding some speed keeping me out of the sandtrap. Nerves shaken, I turn back the dial a bit. The rest of the track surely will not be this forgiving. I enter Adenauer Forst, my favorite corner as it was the toughest for me to negotiate every single lap. Uphill and sharp left followed by a sharp right downhill. The camber changes in this transition was enough to make it a handful at the steering wheel. I would understeer in and oversteer out, even when taking it relatively easy with the rainfall. This lap was definitely riding on nerves and fear. It was exillerating and humbling to imagine professional drivers negotiate this track under these conditions for so long during the 24hour Rennen just a month ago. I have developed even MORE respect for these drivers, my boss, and this race track.

Sixth Lap:
The last lap was just a nice easy cool down lap. The rain subsided, it was actually clearing up, but the track was still very wet. I took it easy, savoring the last drive at the "Green Hell". It is quite a great experience, and I wish I had more time, or my own car to thrash on The Ring. I had my fair share of scary moments, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The track commands respect, but if you go into it with the intention of experiencing the track with any shred of common sense, you will be fine. Knowing your boundries, and trying not to do more than you are capable of handling is important; again, I'm glad I chose an underpowered (but well set up) car.

Stuttgart
We returned the rental track-car and we were off on our small German roadtrip. We set in a course for Stuttgart and encountered extreme rainfall. In some areas we were only going 60km/h in unrestricted zones because of the level of water on the ground and low visability. We ended up in Stuttgart an hour and half behind schedule so we stopped in and took a walk downtown. There was a Sommerfest going on, a lot of live music, food, wine, and other treats. We went to a restaurant called Ochs'n Willi and had some of the Schwäbisch Fare. I had Maultasche Suppe (think of a ravioli, but meat stuffed, almost like a sausage, but not super slaty) and Gaisburger Marsch (another soup with beef, potatoes, onion and noodles). It was delicious. Got some Ice Cream, enjoyed the live music and headed out to Karlsruhe just north of the Black Forest. I pulled into a rest stop and slept for the night.

Black Forest
From Karlsruhe we headed toward Freiburg. We avoided highways and primarily took rural roads 462 to 294 cutting straight through the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). There passed through so many quaint picture-esque villiages and valleys. Because it had rained, there were great mists rising out of the forest creating a more mystical atmosphere. It was a very special type of nature, with the towns dotting the path through the hillsides and woods. Small houses built in scattered formation, no fast food places, barely any gas stations, a small Rathaus and a central church...simple living that gave the whole area a timeless feel. I wasn't able to take many pictures as there were very few places to pull off for a view. We had a lot of ground to cover and it was just one amazing sight after another. It made me wish that I had a motorcycle on a sunny day to just get lost and rediscover the Black Forest. After two hours we arrived in Freiburg and took a quick stop. We then headed out of the Black Forest and toward the Bodensee.

Bodensee/Friedrichshafen
The Bodensee (aka Lake Copnstance), is the third largest fresh water lake in Europe. It is bordered by Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We took route 31 all the way from Freiburg toward Friedrichshafen. At the lake's edge we stopped and took in the view. It was beautiful although the weather has been cloudy the entire day. The countryside has been absolutely LUSH green with orchards and vineyards appearing throughout the trip. The south of Germany is absolutely beautiful. There are only so many things to see when on a train, but being able to freely take roads, get lost in a countryside and view a multitude of magnificent views at different vantage points/elevations was well worth the rental cost.

Lindau/München
We follow route 31 all the way down to Lindau from Friedrichshafen and took the A96 straight back to Munich. The south has a large sky, you could see great distances in all directions; off in the distance, areas rainfall, others sun shine. There were wind turbine topped hills that had forming clouds, shrowding the silent blades in a partial fog. There were many large bridges traversing valleys and many more farms and villiages in the countryside. I had been driving for 9 hours, so I decided to pull off and take a nap. Then another hour into Munich. Finally arrived, another epic adventure to add toward the end of this chapter. This past weekend, two other IEP students visited Munich and wanted to see a couple things before wrapping up their year abroad. We did all the inner city stuff like normal, then also went to the Deutsches Museum. I could easily get lost in there and I'd be ok with that. It showcased all different levels of technology and science. It also had an assortment of antique musical instruments and a planetarium. Total (for student) it was only 3€, additional 2€ for the 25 minute planitarium show. Worth it in every sense.

There was a Sommerfest im Olympiapark which was neat. It was like a small carnival with booths to buy stuff from, some rides here and there. Overall great atmosphere for the warm weather. There was a ferris wheel and other cool games for prizes.

Sunday I went once more to the Zugspitze as it was their first times. It was a bit cloudy but the view was still fantastic. Overall decent weather this whole weekend.

I look forward to this coming weekend. There is a chance I'll be doing the RingTaxi, but also I have booked a prepped Suzuki Swift with Rollcage, race tires, race brakes, and bucket seats. I'll be doing 6 laps of my own at the worlds most famous race track.

I went to Stuttgart and explored the city and watched the Solitude Revival - Old Timer Rallye and Bosch Boxburg Classic. I got to see many awesome places in Stuttgart and best of all, many awesome BMW's and other vintage/classic cars.

I've been doing more research on universities. I want to apply to at least three in Germany. I cannot assume that TU-Munich is a gauranteed opportunity. However based on the email response I got from the Office of Mechanical Engineering, the application process is fairly straight forward. I just have to do my best this year and bring up my GPA.

Another university (a Technische Hochschule) I have been looking into deeply is RWTH Aachen which is also VERY well known in research/development. I was looking on topuniversities.com for engineering schools which has a list of the top ~300 schools worldwide.

Technische Universität München is ranked 36th (and is the first entry for German universities)

Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen comes in at 47th (second in Germany)

Technische Universität Braunschweig, ranked 190th. (hmm....)

I'm truly excited to get this application process under way. I have to start concentrating on the Stipendium/scholarship/financial aid opportunities, due in the Fall, and slowly collect all I need for these University applications due next Spring. While wrapping the last year of my curriculum up in the States, I want to prepare for the Fundamantals of Engineering exam which would be beneficial if I have to take any entrance exams in Germany strengthen my chances. I have an appointment tomorrow with our department head at BMW to ask his opinion on Grad Schools, and possible future praktikum/Master thesis opportunities with the company, should I find myself back in Germany. I hope it goes well.Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-19977505770646158182011-07-22T09:59:00.001+02:002011-07-22T12:21:30.176+02:00The real countdown begins...Monday I was able to single handedly track and obtain the part held at a DHL warehouse not far from München; we've been waiting for this part since early last week. I delivered it as needed and helped out (hands on) with the removal of some parts, and helped with the preperation of the car till late Tuesday. Monday I also had coffee with an important contact and friend of the IEP. He gave me excellent advice regarding application for Masters studies and some people to talk to to gain some insight into their experience. We also talked a lot about travels and how fascinating it is to see actual tangible history; something a lot of the U.S. lacks. He made a couple great recommendations of places to see in Italy. I probably won't have very much Gleitzeit to use for small excursions to other countries, before my time is up. But I will definitely make good on those recommendations when I return to Europe.

Yesterday I discovered something new. Based on personal experience, and having come from the United States, I have to say, it is IMPOSSIBLE to drive a right hand drive vehicle without a big smile on your face. I learned how to drive on a standard over 11 years ago (yup, i'm that old) and while I didn't stall, I got the same sensation of having to concentrate on everything I was doing with regards to shifting. The first time I wanted to shift, my right hand went straight into the door...and immediately remembered the shifter is on the left now. I knew the shift pattern was identical, because the transmission configuration is not dependant on which side the steering wheel is on. But in such a short time, I was not able to break the instinct of wanting to mirror the motion of normal shifting, since using left hand. Either way, I took it easy, and while I had to concentrate on what I was doing, the ear to ear smile on my face made it appear as though I just won the lottery.

Another student collegue and I had an appointement at TU Munich. We asked general questions about the masters program and what would be required for enrollment. We were advised to take it up with the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering to see if our Bachelors is adiquate as prerequisite to Masters Studies. I am also looking at other schools, particularly in Aachen because they have excellent research programs. While it is difficult to say which type of university would be better, I feel based on my past experience I fall more into a practical application of study than a lot of theory. I always worked with my hands, and liked to figure things out on something tangable. It's a lot to take into consideration, and I have been asking anyone and everyone, their opinions on the matter. This is also only possible if I qualify for some financial aid. But it's better to plan 6 months ahead, than to be lost at the starting line.

Everyone is posting about how little time they have left. Because I started my internship a month later, I'm here till September 2. Just DAYS before the new semester starts back at URI. I have mixed emotions about this deadline. It would be nice to go back and see my girlfriend and friends, work on my car, visit family...but I can't even begin to fathom the reverse culture shock. I am so comfortable here in Germany, everything falls into order, everything works that needs to. I am entering one of the hardest semesters in my academic career, taking on more course-credits than I have ever had in one semester. Normally I take summer classes to ease the workload during semesters since I had a daily commute to and from University which takes 3 hours. It's going to be very challenging.Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-72378850795561793212011-07-18T15:09:00.011+02:002011-08-17T00:16:52.490+02:00DTM München 2011DTM was a lot of fun, they had several one-on-one races with various types of cars, a historic race car demo, stunt motorcycling, drift event, and an F1 demonstration.
It also passed by almost too quickly. There is a lot going on to prepare one of the cars and we have been waiting on a part from England. We were all wondering what happened, and I asked a colleague in England if he had any info. Come to find out, DHL refused delivery because of some complication with the address used. They needed a Lieferschein/new delivery note but we were never made aware. So the part just sits in their warehouse. The complication was that the address listed for FIZ cannot be used for delivery, and the central warehouse ON the FIZ campus......has a different address but is not actually located at said address. Oh dear...

Anyhow at least we know where the part is, and it might be easier to just pick it up as opposed to jumping through hoops to get this delivery note changed.

This weekend is DTM München! I missed out on the discounted tickets for BMW but might go anyway depending. Definitely going to be at the Paddocks. BMW just revealed their new 2012 M3 DTM. It's beautiful.
I just realized that I missed out on one of the IEP Essays. I have to write that quick and see if there's a chance it will still be accepted. The week with Amanda visiting and this busy week, I totally lost track of time. I can't believe I only have 7 weeks left.Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-39716209043255946112011-07-12T17:41:00.001+02:002011-07-12T21:13:20.622+02:00already?This week flew by fast!

Saturday (July 2nd) a couple friends from Braunschweig came to visit München and we went touristy shopping and hanging out at the Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten. Beer, laughter, good times ensued. Amanda even bought a Dirndl.

Sunday (July 3rd) we went to the Neuburger Schlossfest. Think of a Rennaisance festival, but german, in the middle of a cobblestoned town, and a palace. In any event it was fun seeing everyone in costume, and the food was excellent. There was Käsespätzle (kindof a german mac n' cheese), and Rahmbrot...kinda like a flat bread with melted creamcheese and bacon all over it. It was great.

Monday/Tuesday: Amanda was able to navigate through the Ubahn on her own and saw a lot of sights. We went to Tollwood Festival in the Olympia park and saw many other places around town.

Wednesday: We went to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to visit the Zugspitze. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. We had a beer at Germany's highest Biergarten and got a quick bite to eat. I had Spaghetti (though it was fantastic) and she had Käse-Spinat Knödel and it was also delicious. We took the Cog-train (Zahnrad Bahn) up the mountain, followed by a short Cable Car to the summit. But we took the longer Cable Car down towards the Eibsee which was deep blue with a turquoise tint around shallow areas. Excellent view of the mountains. Went back but and prepared for thursday.

Thursday: We took a train to Salzburg and went on the Sound of Music Tour. The tourguide was absolutely hilarious! Unbelievably fun. We saw so many cool places in the Austrian country side, I just wish we had more time to stop and take it all in. But man, I thought Bavaria was gourgous....Austria is amazing in it's own right. My new favorite soft drink is called Almdudler; it's and austrian beverage that tastes like a not so carbonated ginger ale type thing that is a tad bit sweeter. No way to describe it, but it was nice. We ended up back in Salzburg and walked around the city a bit. There was a footpath across a river, and what seemed to be a boat launch area. We walked down it, took our shoes/flip flops off and stood in the crystal blue water. The water was so clear, so clean, so COLD because it was ice melt from the mountains. The water felt quite soft (as in low mineral content) and almost slippery (but not in a contaminated kind of way). They had water fountains of this glacial water in several areas. We filled out water bottles up and it tasted more neutral than any water i've ever had before.

Friday: we just hung around munich, did some shopping and had some good meals. Nice relaxing day.

Saturday: was a sad day, amanda had to fly back to the states . After seeing her off to the airport, I took my camera and some gear over to BMW FIZ and took a 50 minute time lapse. It's my second attempt at a time lapse (the first being Nürburgring, but wasnt really good).

Sunday: I did a lot of nothing. I walked around the city, went to Olympia Park and took yet another time lapse...then headed off for the weekly Sunday German Stammtisch. It started to rain heavily but it was a nice storm. Lots of thunder and lightning. It cooled the air down quite a bit.

Will update with pictures later today...
I have been in contact with a couple wheel manufacturers like Rays Engineering/Volk Racing, BBS, and Team Dynamics to find a set of wheels. Rays seems to have a great selection of products that might fit the bill.

Other than that, not much to really report. BMW M3 GT #1 was ripping around by the Mobile Tradition, and it sounded beautiful. Surely celebrating it's pole position victory from Nürburgring.

I visited the research side of BMW ///M today in Garching while carrying out an assignment. The contact there who I had to speak with was very very friendly and it was amazing to see the garage with so many beautiful ///M cars. When i retire, I will buy a 1-series M.

thats about it!
My girlfriend is coming today to visit for a week! I am excited to show her this beautiful city during the summer season. I have to work Monday and Tuesday, and my supervisor was nice to let me take wednesday through friday off. I am not sure what we will do as i'm a bit strapped on cash, but day trips here and there might fit the bill. Or just relax in the city as Amanda's been under some pressure lately. either way, it's going to be great spending time with her with so many festivities that go on in München on a weekly basis. There's the open air theater at the olympic park, concert at BMW Museum, and more.

We woke up, made breakfast and quickly broke down camp. We packed all our belongings into the car and cleaned the campsite better than we found it. I tallied up what everyone owed and spent for groceries, cars and gas so we could split the cost (i kept all recipts). Then we split up and a group of us went to Nürburg. The other went straight to the Grand Prix circuit to watch the last 3 hours of the race.

Burg Nürburg is a castle built in the middle ages and stands on the second highest hill in Eifel. It is a major landmark of the area next to the Nürburgring itself and is visible from many spots on the east side of the track. It cost about 2,50€ to get in to the ruins with student I.D. It was an absolutely beautiful view. The spiral staircase to the top of the main tower was dark and cooler than the outside temperature. Once to the top however, there were so many flies, bees and other bugs! We were running around flailing, barely could take a picture. It was a grand view of the beautiful landscape which is by far one of the best I've seen in Germany so far (other than the mountains down south of course).

We head back to the Grand Prix track and I set off to meet up with, once again, Mrs. Hürtgen. But alas, no one could tell me where I could find her, and the team mates at the Paddocks were very very busy. I called Jörg and he was kind enough to meet up with me again so I headed over to the Dörr Motorsport tent.

He invited me in and I asked him if he could take the map [which he himself had signed] and ask for Claudia's autograph the next time he saw her (following monday or tuesday). I saw another BMW colleague, Frank Weishar, whom I met from BMW Driver Training a couple weeks ago, and asked for his autograph. He was also a driver of the 1-series Diesel (#195) that Jörg was also piloting. After that two more colleagues of theres, other established drivers, just wandered in and they got them to sign the map as well! I was getting a lot more than I was expecting. Hanging out in the Dörr Motorsport tent was really neat; there was a Z4 GT3 and a pallete with an M3 motor on it. Next to the pallete was a brand new white e92 M3....without a motor. Where they using this brandy new car as a parts car? the world may never know ;)
Unforunately, the 1 series diesel that was being driven encountered catastrophic failure on the rear axle so they were forced to retire.

After I said my goodbyes to the racers, I headed back to the Stands to see the last hour of the race. It was a clear beautiful day, a treat after the 3 days of drizzle and constant weather changes. The race ended with a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (#18) winning first, BMW M3 GT2 (#1) winning second, and an Audi R8 LMS winning third. However, really everyone who finished claimed a victory for a successful 24hour race which challenged the drivers, the cars and the teams to work harder and longer encountering all types of weather conditions. It was a great race.... I was glad to have the opportunity to view it in person.

I woke up at 6:30am. It was quiet, no music, no fireworks, everyone was resting up for the big day; the day the 24hr Race at Nürburgring started. In this silence, I took a walk on the track itself from Schwalbenschwanz through Sprunghügel and into Pflanzgarten. There is a lot of history on this course. It is the longest and most challenging course known in Motorsports. I heard it takes 1000 hours of driving to understand and almost master it; but the Grüne Hölle is unforgiving and always has it's surprises; one can almost experience three seasons worth of road conditions in a single lap around the ring. One has to be able to adapt their driving style, knowing when to take it slow can be the difference between a fast time, and ending up in a wall.

People have left their mark on the track with paint. Messages ranging from advertisements, names, simple hello to parents and memorials in places people have died when driving on the track. I wish I had some paint to leave my impression. The stillness in the air with the sun casting an orange-white glow made the legendary track seem surreal.

We head out to Wehrseifen which is a very sharp left hairpin coming off a downhill followed by an uphill right-hander. We setup and it starts to rain (re-occuring theme). I fashioned a rainjacket for my camera by putting a hole in a plastic bag for the lens. I was able to catch the tail end of the MINI Challenge and saw Jörg drive by... but I wasn't able to take any pictures in time. Jörg placed 4th overall during the race due to some complications. But he did place 2nd in qualifying which is also an achievement in of itself. I hope there will be more successes in the future.

The Porsche World Cup started with a driver parade (like all the other races) where all 100 cars from 25 different countries drove through putting on a display before they battled eachother and the elements. Once the race was underway, in the FIRST lap, there were so many crashes and cars spinning out due to the wet weather conditions. It was such an amazing race, one could see the drivers taking different lines through the corner. Some were more experienced than others, and it showed.

We moved location to Brünnchen and waited for the 24hr Rennen Nürburgring to start. During the wait there were several parades and events taking place. They set up a large ramp and 3 motorcyclists jumped and did tricks while a cold and wet crowd cheered and clapped. There was a lap of small kids in what seemed like hundreds of go-karts driving around the track in a large group. It was really fun to watch. Next came a parade of Audi R8's, then there was Volkswagens XL1 concept car.

Finally it was time for the 24hr Rennen Parade. The cars drive around in groupings and people cheered, waved flags enthusiastically, and blasted airhorns for their favorite drivers, cars and teams. The cars, sometimes weaving to warm up tires responded with engine revs, and waves from drivers. The race was underway, and the fastest pack screamed through the large sweeping right and up-hill at Brünnchen.

After a while, I walked along the track to get a different vantage point. I took pictures and video at the Caraciolla-Carousel, Klostertal, Mutkurve and walked through a path in the woods along the second fastest straight at Kesselchen (where cars achieve up to 256km/h). Finally, after 8 km of wandering I arrived near Wehrseifen again. I took a shuttle-bus to Flugplatz where the others were. Flugplatz is a fast portion of track with an area that cars sometimes jump over a crest. It's really neat to see high powered race cars leap into the air at 230km/h.

I took the bus back to the welcome center/grand prix circuit to try to catch Claudia Hürtgen again. She was already gone for the day, but it's understandable, there was a LOT going on. Jörg was driving at the time, so I ended up going back to the camp site. BBQ, and more socializing with cars screaming around corners in the background. It was a pleasant evening!

First thing in the morning was the Classics Race. Many old vintage cars were present and was even a [very very loud] BMW M1! It was interesting to see all these old cars having a go around the Nordschleife as if re-living their hay-day in motorsports. It never ceases to amaze me how many coveted BMW e30 M3(1986-1992) were being used for racing. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to find spare parts (body or otherwise) if one were to crash. But the same goes for any of these classic vehicles. After the Classics Race, there were more qualifying rounds for the MINI Challenge, 24hr and Porsche World Cup.

We visited the Paddocks (Fahrerlager) by teh Grand Prix circuit and welcome center. We saw many of the cars being worked on, tuned and lots of merchandise. I made my way through the different staging areas and met up with Jörg Weidinger as he was coming back from qualifying in the MINI Challenge. He placed 2nd! I had a map of the Nürburgring and I was finally able to ask him for his autograph, not as my boss, but as a racecar driver. I asked him to sign by his favorite curve/corner/place on the ring. He is quite awesome and enthusiastic about motorsports, I introduced my friends to him and they were all excited to talk to him. I took his picture, and asked him where I could find Claudia Hürtgen, whom I picked up a couple weeks ago from the airport. Claudia Hürtgen is a very skilled and respected driver of the Schubert Motorsport Z4 GT3. I got the Paddock/Garage numbers and headed off to try to catch her before the 24hr qualifying run. I spotted her shortly in the booth but she was off to the staging area and I couldn't pass through the massive crowd in time to catch up with her. She was quite busy anyhow, so I will try again the next day.

There were some really high end race cars and some oddballs as well. The Artega GT was a strange looking car no one could initially identify. The Ferrari's were loud and very fast. There was a Lamborgini and a Dodge Viper. Sprinkle many Volkswagens, Renault, MINI, Peugot, Audi, BMW and Porsches into the mix and there is a well rounded grouping of cars. It rained a little bit more and there was so much slippery mud, it was as though you risk your shoe being stuck with every step.

There was a massive party at Campground Brünnchen, we were told good thing we didn't stay there if we wanted to sleep. I contemplated going, but I had a headache and was quite tired from catching less than 5 hours of sleep for the day. We sat around a fire and talked to friendly Germans about everything under the sun. Making jokes, laughing about cultural differences, and comparing life and travel in different countries. The people there were so friendly and open, we all felt like old friends even though we may have only met eachother the day, hour or minute before. It was epic.
It was nice seeing all the cars of all makes and models. The most distinguishing sound came from the Mercedes SLS. We grilled and talked with our camp neighbors and I explored a bit of the track. The weather was strange, switching intermittently between rain and sun. It started to get muddy, but it didn’t matter. The lingering smell of race fuel was in the air, and it was oh so sweet.

One does not appreciate the technical difficulty of a track until you see it with your own eyes. Tracking the cars as they come around bends and what you think is a straight away, offers a switching camber shifting the cars right and left; ultimately making some lose their line or even snuffing it into the grass. The hills were extremely steep. You cannot appreciate the gradient by merely playing video games. The "Small Carousel" is a tight hairpin turn with a steep bank. A lot of cars scrape as they dip in, and one can often see sparks of parts of the underbody being ripped off the car. It was very difficult taking pictures as there were fences everywhere, albeit for good safety reasons.
We packed full, bought groceries and hit the road (a bit later than scheduled). There was an unbelievable sense of freedom driving on the autobahn. Not so much because of unrestricted speed limits in some areas, but the visual scenery that one cannot get by simply sitting on the train. I experienced some of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen in Germany, driving into the horizon. It has left a great impression in my mind of the German country side and only strengthens the appreciation and beauty this country has to offer. By the way, the 118d is restricted to 220km/h, but it was still a great drive.

We arrived at the Nürburgring around 1am. The first two camping grounds, Brünnchen and Planzgarten, were completely full. Imagine Woodstock with a lot of tents, scaffolding, campers, bond fires, a lot of loud music, small fireworks and people wandering about this is after midnight btw. We end up at Schwalbenschwanz which was just as festive, but they had some open spots. We searched around for a while until we finally found a small plot. We ask three gentlemen nearby if it’s available. Jokingly they asked, “Are you guys going to be loud?” We said no and they welcomed us to park. Welcome is an understatement. As soon as we got out of the car, they handed each of us a beer, and then proceeded to help us setup camp. We talked and joked around with them until 4am. This was not your stereotypical camping. This was a festival.

In the realm of fanatics and sports enthusiasts, one can imagine riots by both angry and celebratory fans. This was something else. The atmosphere was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Here were thousands of people, united under a common interest regardless of who won or lost. While everyone had their brand loyalties, this was a festival to celebrate the love of Motorsport. We met so many people out of random, and the dispensing/offer of beer was more common than a handshake.
Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-920442020298605682011-06-22T15:47:00.000+02:002011-06-22T15:47:51.069+02:00This past week has been a blur. A lot of planning and work was done. I am now waiting for some student colleagues to arrive in München and then we are picking up our rental car (BMW 1er diesel, naturally). Tonight we will be camping at the Nürburgring and preparing for the festivities, races, and other events at the "Grüne Hölle."
I can't wait to go, this is any motorsports enthusiasts goal; to visit the Nürburgring at least once in their lifetime. I will be back in August however for RingTaxi (a lap around the Nürburgring itself, driven by my boss), and the DTM race on the following day.
They set up one of the large telescopes fixed on Saturn. It looked so small in the viewfinder, but all the rings were clearly visible. It was definitely humbling looking at the cosmos, and realizing just how small we are. The International Space Station streaked overhead, and we also saw an Iridium Flare (communications satelites whose panels reflect sunlight as they pass).
Anthony arrived safely and Nick came over so we all had dinner at my place. We talked and talked and finally we called it a night at 2am. We weren't going to wake up in time for the train to Salzburg.... but it's alright.

Sunday:
Anthony was only in for a day and half, so we walked all around München. Marienplatz, Englischer Garten, then headed to BMW Museum and Welt. We checked pricing on the Olympiaturm and it's only 4,50euro to go up. Open most days until 11:30pm! We didn't go this time around because we were really hungry and it was quite busy (there were many people in Olympiaplatz for the Bon Jovi concert). We had PizzaHut which was better than I was expecting.... then WALKED all the way back to Marienplatz to go to Hofbräuhaus. It was a long day.

Monday:
We went on a historic Steam Train ride around München. It was so much fun! The smoke of coals burning, the whistles and the chugging along the tracks. Definitely a fun hour spent on a holiday.

Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-37972221245196004632011-06-11T15:16:00.003+02:002011-06-11T15:19:38.405+02:00Trials and tribulations of failure - A valuable lesson in Time ManagementToday I have failed. I took on more than I could accomplish. I had to prepare two cars for testing which involved fetching parts, checkovers/inspections, and getting fluids changed. I had to speak to someone whom I have never met before, in an area I wasn't familiar with. When I couldn't reach him over the phone, I moved onto the next task. I hadn't even taken lunch but I accomplished all other things that needed to be done, and finally tackled the last task from earlier (brake fluid change) I went over to the department, the contact wasn't there, and I asked the co-workers if it was possible. They said there was no time left, and it would have to wait till next Tuesday (the cars will underway by then).

I feel pretty disappointed and my boss assured me it wasn't to big of a deal. He said that he will have the brake fluid changed at the testing area. I still feel as though I let people down. I don't want to be seen as unreliable and this could have been easily avoided. It was a very hard lesson of learning how to manage time and prioritize. If I can offer ANY advice from this experience it is one word:

ASK

If you aren't sure, ask
If you need help, ask
If you are in over your head, ask (to delegate)
If you don't know who your contact is, ask

Even if everyone is slammed with work, extremely busy, it is better to ask for clarification than to do your work incorrectly (or not at all). You aren't going to annoy anyone, you aren't going to be frowned upon for not knowing how to accomplish something. The purpose of the internship is to gain knowledge in the field/industry and sometimes you can only do so by asking for clarification. I took on more than I could accomplish and I don't know if it was a matter of pride/over enthusiasm/willingness to take on new tasks....but I should have asked for assistance early on. Lesson learned.

...it also doesn't help that it was the Friday before a holiday so people were leaving early anyhow. This may have contributed to the shorter time frame of available assistance, but it shouldn't have been a problem if I contacted my co-workers ahead of time.

This weekend a friend is visiting from Braunschweig; We may be going to Salzburg tomorrow for some sight seeing. It's also his first time in München so I'm sure there will be some city sights to be seen.Payamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904512868361549537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4503388800690834715.post-81631499648933979912011-06-06T18:16:00.004+02:002011-06-06T18:22:29.915+02:00Today I had to pick someone up from München- Flughafen (airport). To my surprise it was the Claudia Hürtgen! She is the race driver for BMW Motorsports Z4 GT3. She was super friendly and I practiced my German the entire drive while she practiced her [already awesome] English. I hope I am able to get an Autograph later. She will also be competing in the coming weeks at 24hr Rennen Nürburgring so maybe I can remind her then. She recognized me before I spotted her out, she said she has seen me at Messegelände Aschheim; this made me feel happy as she was already aware of my existence somehow :D
I have ordered a new telephoto lens and I hope to take some better pictures this event.
